Maintain your router bits to get best performance
The flexibility and versatility of router bits makes them one of the most important tools for shaping, cutting and edging of materials. So, naturally you need to protect your investment by taking good care of your router bits. Router bits are not only classified on the basis of its functionality but also on the basis of the material they are made up of.
The most common type of router bits used is carbide tipped. Though these router bits outlast high speed steel bits, however they are quite brittle and require extra care while handling to avoid chipping the cutting edge. As with the cutting tool, they must be maintained properly to keep them razor sharp for the best routing experience. Moreover, dull bits are most likely to chip or tear the material being routed. They also put more stress on the router motor itself without delivering desired routing performance.
Storing router bits at a safe place is very important otherwise they get knocked around and damage each others cutting edge. One of the best ways to store router bits is to buy router bits storage trays. Such trays are easily available and keep bits separated and safe from each other. Keeping your bits clean is equally important. Bits get coated with wood resin or pitch which eventually reduce the cutting efficiency of the bit. Therefore, occasional cleaning of router bits is very important. You can remove heavy resin build up with a good quality spray. However, cleaners for router bits are also available in the market.
In order to obtain good results, it very important that the bits should be sharps enough to deliver good results. Grinding and honing are the two steps that are required for sharpening a router bit. Grinding remove nicks and reestablishes the correct cutting level. It involves removing significant amount to metal from the router bit. A router bit must be in perfect rotational balance to cut effectively and be safe for use. Therefore, one should be careful while removing metal from the router bit. I would say one better leave that task to professionals rather than doing it by itself.
However, honing is not as difficult as grinding and can be performed by oneself. The honing process involves removing minute amount of metal, so there are no worries of throwing bits out of balance or changing the profile significantly. It is quite important to be familiar with the router bit you are planning to use so that you can get the best performance every time.
